چکیده

Phylogeography relies on examination of geographical distributions of genealogical lineages (Avise, 2000), whereas biogeography relies upon concordant geographical distributions of multiple species (Briggs, 1974; Nelson & Platnick, 1981). However, just as biogeography depends on evidence from multiple species, inference about phylogeographical patterns can be strengthened by examination of multiple codistributed species (i.e. comparative phylogeography). Concordance of gene-tree partitions across multiple codistributed species implies that the same historical biogeographical factors (e.g. vicariance) have shaped intraspecific phylogenies (Avise, 2000). Evidence from multiple taxa is more relevant when the physical barrier responsible for a particular vicariant event is not conspicuous or the date of its appearance cannot be accurately determined. One such case is illustrated by the vicariant events caused by geological activity of the uplifted Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) in central Mexico (Fig. 1). Tectonic and volcanic activity in the TMVB began in the early Miocene (c. 25 Ma; Ferrari et al., 1999), and apparently Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing, CA, USA

Historical biogeography of the livebearing fish genus Poeciliopsis (Poeciliidae: Cyprinodontiformes).

To assess the historical biogeography of freshwater topminnows in the genus Poeciliopsis, we examined sequence variation in two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome b (1140 bp) and NADH subunit 2 (1047 bp). This widespread fish genus is distributed from Arizona to western Colombia, and nearly half of its 21 named species have distributions that border on the geologically active Trans-Mexican Volcani...

Reproduction of the fish Poeciliopsis gracilis (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) in Coatetelco, a tropical shallow lake in Mexico.

A reproductive analysis of 1225 specimens of Poeciliopsis gracilis obtained through monthly samples from Coatetelco, a tropical shallow lake in Central Mexico, was made. There was an evident sexual dimorphism, including a difference in body size at the onset of reproduction. Sex ratio deviated significantly from unity. Monthly variations in gonadosomatic (GSI), hepatosomatic (HSI) indexes and o...

Gonopodial system review and a new fish record of Poeciliopsis infans (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) for Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan, central Mexico.

Since 1997, Poeciliopsis infans Woolman 1894 has been recognized as a new inhabitant of Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan in Central Mexico. Between February 1997 and October 1998, nine fish samples were collected at Lake Patzcuaro. Morphometric and meristic counts were conducted on a random selection of 40 organisms of both sexes of Poeciliopsis infans. Males of these viviparous fish posses a modified...

Testing the interactive effects of carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids on ejaculate traits in the guppy Poecilia reticulata (Pisces: Poeciliidae).

Using the polyandrous livebearing guppy Poecilia reticulata, this study revealed no main effects of carotenoids in the diet on ejaculate traits, but significant main effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on sperm viability and weak but significant interacting effects of both nutrients on sperm length. Collectively, these findings not only add evidence that PUFAs are critical determinan...

Molecular phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of the placenta in Poecilia (Micropoecilia) (Poeciliidae: Cyprinodontiformes).

Poeciliids are one of the most intensively studied groups within Cyprinodontiformes owing to their use as model organisms for experimental studies on natural and sexual selection, and comparative studies of life-history evolution. Life-history studies have demonstrated multiple origins of placentotrophy and superfetation in poeciliids, including the recent description of placentotrophy in three...
